3 Simple Steps to Creating an Outdoor Oasis
From garden sheds and cabins to verandas and porches, you can get creative with any space and transform it into an ideal escape. And it doesn’t require a lot of space, either! A little imagination, planning, and perhaps some professional design help are all you need.
If you’re looking for a secluded sanctuary to garden or entertain in, look to your own backyard. It can be transformed into an oasis in three simple steps:
-
-
Start by identifying your purpose.
What do you want to use this space for? Maybe you love to stretch out on a lounge chair and read. Or perhaps you enjoy chasing the grandkids around on the grass, and want to add some playground equipment to your design plan.
For me, it’s all about the long summer evenings. They provide a time for myself and my family to sit and relax on our veranda. So it’s important to me to select the right pieces of comfortable furniture and to incorporate ambient lighting with candles and mini-lights.
Because design is about more than just sight, I also decorate with some beautiful plants for both colour and fragrance. These simple additions turned our plain veranda into a sought-after haven!
-
Select appropriate decorative accents.
To accentuate your space and make it cozier, get creative with books, toss cushions, throws, lighting and greenery. Customize it to your heart’s content!
For example, if you need to make your space a little more private, use curtains to block out neighbours. If you want to dine outdoors, explore all the different types of tables and chairs you can bring into the space. Mixing materials always makes it interesting: combine interesting textures and fabrics for a truly unique space.
The thing I love about decorative accents is that you can change things up as often as you wish.
-
Be a bit practical.
It’s wonderful to experiment with various design styles and materials, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you to be practical!
For example, if your yard gets a lot of sun in the summer, consider fade-proof cushions and pillows. If the warm evenings bring out the bugs, look to citronella candles and even screened-in dining areas you can retreat to if it gets to be too much.
